Weight loss Success Story: Etal

Another weight loss success story from Etal a WLB group member, She has loss 18 kg in 5 months.

1. About myself, family & job:
I am Etal but my friends and family know me as Eruke who has been over weight all her life. I am an only child, an Urhobo by tribe and from Delta state, Nigeria. I speak my mother tongue Urhobo, English fluently (studied English), and a bit of French. I work as an Underwriter in a private insurance firm in Nigeria and presently residing in Enugu.

2. How long and my ideal goal:
It took me 5 months to get to my ideal weight. My ideal goal was 57 kg as against 75 kg. But, when I got to 57.7 kg I was too skinny. So, am presently fluctuating between 58 – 59 kg which is
ok by me now.

3. My motivation:
I wanted to be able wear what I love to wear not what would size me. I love fitted and hugging clothes but my fatty body denied me that. I was buying what would size me not what I love. It was quite depressing. And all my family members are skinny and tall….! But, I was d only short and fat one. It was not funny at all. And I am very shy… I needed to have confidence in me without someone telling me. Been fat made it worse for me. But, my 2012 birthday picture was the final stroke when I saw my tummy as big as a 7 months pregnant lady.

4. What kept me on track:
When I began losing weight, I had more energy and felt very beautiful…. It gave me confidence. I felt this joy in me that I cannot explain, but it kept me on even when nobody seemed to notice it.

5. My typical day(exercising & eating):
I began at first with 1hr cardio workouts in d mornings (aerobics involving dancing, I love to dance) followed by at least 75cl or more of water. But, as time went on I had workout DVDs I use morning or evening for 30 to 45mins daily. My meals daily must have fruit, egg/beans/fish or chicken/ sweet potatoes/occasionally swallows not more than a fist size. I do snack in between meals but it’s usually fruits (apples, watermelon, bananas, garden eggs, oranges) or something small like a handful of groundnuts, boiled eggs, etc

6. Whats the biggest difference:
I am now very confident….. and so so so happy….

7. How do I keep the weight off:
I have learnt to measure my meals with the knowledge I got from a group known as weightless for Africans, my darling weight loss buddy Phit (Natachy) and I Google lots of info on my favourite foods. So, I try not to eat like I used to. Natachy would always tell me “MODERATION” I eat everything I love but moderately. I work out occasionally and I try to b active every chance I get. Although, I over do things occasionally, but, I try to balance it as soon as I can

8.  What other diet have I tried:
I used Edmark products some time ago when I was too fat and my mum got worried, I suggested it and she bought some of the products. But, I could not maintain d weightless. So, I gave up. I didn't have 28,000 thousand naira to spend on supplements either.

9. Advise to others losing weight:
Make and stand by the decision to lose weight, be ready to make sacrifices until you are able to discipline yourself not to go back to your former ways of eating and believe in yourself, this is very important.

10. Popular slogan: “ No more Fat and Fabulous but Fit and Fabulous”
Congratulations Etal on reaching your goal, please do maintain it and keep living a healthy life

Moments of Truth: Accountability Result

I can remember entering this accountability stuff weeks ago and did i stay accountable, the answer is yes i did but did the scale move, the answer is no it didn't move, was I disappointed, Yes I was as of yesterday but today am happy because I had non scale victories.
  1. My blazers are now super oversize that I can't even manage them anymore.
  2. I have loss inches on my arm, waist and thigh.
  3. My energy and fitness level has increased.
  4. I have loss 2% body fat
Am super happy because I maintained 67 kg while having non scale victories. However, come June things must have to change............I will stay motivated and keep moving.

Simple Weight Loss tips

  1. 80/20 eater: in order for my meal to be fun and interesting, I make 80% of my daily meal healthy and 20% fun. This doesn't mean I eat 20% of junk daily. According to Jillian Micheal, this will keep temptation off.
  2. Be positive: tell yourself that you can instead of always being negative. Every decision is a choice and being positive will help you be in control.
  3. Diversify your workout:  working different muscles at the same time ( that is cardio and strength training) will not only help you burn more calories but saves time.
  4. Get enough sleep: sleep is important in weight loss and management as it affects hormones responsible for how you burn or store fat as well as maintain muscle. Balancing this hormone will enable better weight loss and management.
  5. Be wise when eating out: example, today after classes a friend wanted us to do lunch together. Each time she wants us do lunch, i refuse but today she was so pissed that i decided to go. We got to Locus Leaf, a Chinese restaurant after looking at the menu full of noodles and rice. I decided to order steamed veggies with roasted duck, it was delish and I was able to control both oil and sauces. You can do the same when you eat out, don't be scared because you are paying for it. Tell them what you want, you can also divide the meal and take the rest home.
  6. Eat lean meat:  it helps keep you full longer and it also it contains amino acids which helps in building muscles. Lean meat such turkey, fish, chicken, duck, crab, kidney etc.
  7. Pack your snack: packing your snack on the go always helps. Because you don't know when hunger will strike (hunger has no respect). I have realized that I tend to make unhealthy  choices when I don't plan my meals or snacks. I pack almond nut with apples when am on the go.
  8. Drink enough water: it will not only curb hunger but boost your metabolism by 3%.
  9. Keep your house clean of all junk food especially those food that you are still struggling with. its better not to buy them than tempt yourself unnecessarily keeping them at home. I always fall for belvita breakfast biscuit so I don't even dare buying them.
  10. Keep healthy food at your reach: when am studying or watching movies I tend to leave a bowl of orange or clementine close to me just in case my mouth starts searching for what to eat.
  11. Be wise on cheat days: make sure to ration any junk you want to eat during cheat days, don't just put your mouth to it. Don't buy junks in bulk even if they are cheaper in bulks, buy only 1 serving that way you are only going to eat 1 serving.

Weight Loss Success Story: Gugu C

I am very excited to share Gugu's weight loss story, she is one of my buddies in my Weight Loss Buddies group (WLB). She started at 107 kg now 99 kg

What is your starting, current and Goal weight?
Starting Weight: 107kg
Current Weght: 99kg

Goal Weight: 77kg, most likely to change as the journey continues

1. Tell us a bit about yourself, family and job

Well, where do I start? I am the fourth in a family of 5, married to an amazing man and still in honeymoon phase, meaning no kids yet. I am an Electrical Control Systems Engineer, which is just a fancy name for controlling electrical systems using programs. This involves lots of site (factory) work during implementation phase of projects.
2. How long did it take you to get to where you are now and what is your ideal goal

I’ve been on this journey on and off for years but really became serious about it on the 2nd of Jan, 2013.

3. What was your motivation to lose weight

When visited my Family in August, I noticed, more than 70% of them were heavy set and I was not far from crossing that line. We are a family of caterers, so that could be one of the reasons. While the ladies were good in the kitchen, the lots of the men were avid sportsmen (My Grandfather played lawn tennis for Nigeria at a national level. At 96, he is as fit as a fiddle.)
My mum started her weight loss journey to combat health issues and urged us to join her as she saw instantaneous results in eating healthily.
I did not want to be the Fat on in the family photos, and more importantly, for overall health.

4. What has kept you on track on your weight loss journey

Like I said earlier, I have been on this journey for years, but what I lacked to sustain me previously was support from like-minded people on the same journey. Joining the African Weight Loss forum and subsequently WLB as a BB group has been invaluable in keeping me on track. The hubbys smile as the dress sizes drop is also a great motivation.

5.  What is your typical day in terms of exercise and eating?

Most days (I do have off days when things do not go according to plan), I wake up bright and early, and do some home exercise DVD (Insanity program or Hip Hip Abs by Shawn T, Shred by Jillian Micheals or Teabo work out). In the evening, (3 times a week) I visit the gym for anytime between 50mins to an 1hr 30 mins, depending on how busy the day was, and that will consist of some cardio, kettle bell training, floor exercises (ab workout) and weights.

6.  What is the biggest difference you have noticed due to your weight loss

I am much fitter, and clothes fit much better. No more shopping at plus size sections with limited options.

7.  How do you keep the weight off in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

My sweet tooth is being catered to by fruits (in moderation) and I try to eat regularly without skipping meals. I do eat what I enjoy, but make it a point to try healthy variations of the meals. I also eat a lot more vegetables and proteins. I learnt to listen to my body, if it is too full, too tired or too hungry, it tells me.

8. What diets have you tried?

If there is something called the starvation diet, I have tried that. LOL. I have attempted Atkins as well. These dint last very long, when the convulsions started no one told me to look for some rice and bread to eat.

9.  What advice will you give others trying to lose weight?

Find a support group that promotes healthy eating. The ladies on WLB are now some of my best friends. A good group does not allow people to set unrealistic goals, or promote diet pills and terrible eating patterns.

10. What is your Motto (Quote that has kept you going)

Just keep pushing, it did not take a day to gain the weight, so it sure can’t take a day to get rid of it.

Thanks for sharing your story, I hope this motivates a lot of people because am motivated .....

Jumping Jack Challenge

Jumping jack is an effective exercise for weight loss because it increases the heart rate therefore helps in burning calories. Increase in intensity and speed will increase amount of calories burn which will help in weight loss. You create a greater caloric deficit when you burn more calories. To
lose 1 pound of fat you will need to burn 3500 calories.
The jumping jack challenge is to do 1000 jacks in a day (lets say 10 sets of 100). I read that for every 2 jumping jack you do, you burn 1 calorie. That means 1000 jacks a day will burn 500 calories and in a week that will be 3500 calories which equals 1 pound of fat. By doing this and eating healthy, you can lose 1 pound of fat a week.
Start getting rid of those fats now.........

How Long?

I always get email from people asking me: how long will it take to lose the weight?
2 weeks? 1 month? 3 months? 6 months? or 1 year?

How long it will take you to lose the weight depends entirely on you. From the beginning, I gave myself 3 years to lose the weight, this month marks it 2 years and 5 months. I have done more than  I hoped to achieve but I have not gotten there yet. So, it depends on your situation. I had a lot of weight to lose and i knew the only way I could achieve this without getting frustrated is by taking it
one day at a time, since am trying to get rid of fat accumulated over a long period of time.

There are people who have achieved more in less time but everyone is different, if you can lose it in a short time and maintain it then that's wonderful. Do what works for you but remember that weight loss it not about how fast but the process involved in it. It is a process of change, moving away from your old habit and living a healthier lifestyle, feeling good and happier about yourself. It shouldn't be a yo-yo thing but a lifestyle.

Most people doesn't want to hear the word PATIENCE in weight loss, I have patiently loss 73 kg and kept it off. Please don't send me email asking me how long it will take you to lose weight. That decision is entirely yours. If you decide you want it to take you 3 months then do the hard work and achieve your goal, it is achievable but you have to do the work.

  • 2 green bell pepper
  • stock (cube)

Lose weight and Keep it OFF

Weight loss options and answers:
a)Lose weight fast and gain it all fast: Starve yourself, go on crash diet and don't exercise
b)Lose weight and regain it after plateau: Do cardio without strength training
c)Lose weight, keep it off and be shapely (toned): Healthy eating with sufficient rest, more strength training and less cardio

From above, you have seen various ways of losing weight. You can choose any method you want but I don't believe anyone wants to lose weight and gain it all back (my thought). Ladies don't be scared of training with weights, you can't be like a man unless you train harder (like spending 5
hours in the gym) and consuming a lot of proteins.

If you want a lasting result, eat healthy, less cardio and more strength training to build muscle because muscle is what burns calories. More muscle means you can burn more calories even without doing anything. Starving yourself and doing only cardio will definitely help you lose the weight but keeping it off might be a struggle you could have avoided or reduced.

There are various ways of building muscles without weight, such as doing squats, push ups, lunges but adding weight will go a long way in achieving a quicker and better result. I love using heavy weights because I get the feeling that am truly working out, go for heavy weight if you can. It's better to feel the workout than wait for 2 months to feel like you are using weights. Confuse your body to get better result, the body can easily adapt to what you do so constant changes and modification will help when you hit plateau.

Weight loss is not easy even for those taking pills or starving so why not do it the healthy and fun way but eating healthy, working out and getting enough rest/sleep.

RECIPE: Gingered Mango Smoothie

While coming back from the library yesterday I saw this healthy looking mango staring at me. I actually heard it say...buy me (no I didn't hahahaha). With smoothie on my mind I bought it, after blending, it was too plain and sweet so I decided to add little ginger for some tangy taste. well to cut the long story short, i ended up adding not so little ginger that gave the smoothie  gingery taste. I
tasted it and it was so unbearable so I kept it in the fridge with no idea what to do to it.

So this morning, I thought about adding some banana to sweeten it a bit but decided to tasted first it before adding banana and it was wonderful. I couldn't believe it was the same smoothie I cried about last night.

VERDICT: I enjoyed it, thank God I didn't bin it last night. You can try it out, just mango (skin off) with 1 cup of water and ginger. yummmmmmy

Confession: I Love Food .......

As a Nigerian, food is very important to our culture. Nigerian cuisine consists of food items from various (hundreds) ethic group which made up Nigeria, talk about flavors, herbs, spices,  hot chili, colorful and exciting foods.

I have always loved the kitchen and my mum made us watch her while she cook. She will tell us stories about food and everyone just gets excited, giggling and longing for whats in the pot. At an early age, I cooked a delicious pot of soup although I forgot to add palm oil in the process...it still came out nice...well they said .

I have a very passionate relationship with food and I love cooking.  I have always thought that every Nigerian knows
how to cook until I met some that has no clue how jellof rice is made (lets not go into that).

I can remember that first time I had kidney beans...Oh dear I didn't like it, in fact I binned the food because it was new to me and this is true with most people but now I love trying out new food, you will be amazed the flavors out there.

Food is an opportunity of expressing and acquiring experience, it brings out the creativity in me, it is the act of drawing out different ingredients that make up a meal while thoughtfully combining and understanding the role these ingredients play in bringing a dish together.

I can get bored of studying or watching movies but not with cooking because it gives me this feeling of unending adventure and  relaxation at the same time. The most important achievement in my weight loss journey is that I have managed to balance my love for food, my eating habit and my weight. Before i ate uncontrollably but now it is very different because I eat sensibly.......

Why I love Plain Yogurt

Yeah, you read it well...plain yogurt, not the heavily sweetened and flavored ones but simple and natural plain yogurt. Whether you are adding it into a smoothie, enjoying it or swapping it as a low calorie option compared to other ones. yogurt is a very healthy treat that is popularly known and enjoyed by many. Researchers, nutritionists and doctors recognizes  yogurt as a powerhouse of nutrition for everyone and research continues to prove this. A serving of yogurt is packed with
power boosting nutrients and vitamins known in combating common medical issues. For extra hydration and quick muscle repair after workout I take yogurt.

Yogurt is packed with loads and loads of benefits but not all yogurt is packed with the same amount of nutrients. If you want to get the most out of it, I suggest plain yogurt. It contains twice amount of protein compared to varieties, it has no sugar, it has more calcium and is lower in calories than others.

Flavored and sweetened yogurts are packed with hidden calories, they are high in sugar, preservatives and fat(most times). When buying yogurt, read the nutritional information, don't just buy. Check the protein and sugar content; the higher the protein the lower the sugar

I love plain yogurt because I can control its sweetness and flavors by adding any natural fruit of my choice. So where can you buy plain yogurt in Nigeria:

  • Domino
  • Shoprite
  • Goodies
  • Or any Lebanese or Indian shop

Beans The Naija way

1/2 cup cooked beans with chicken(grilled) and wheat grain bread

This is my lunch for today. Some people might find this combination of food weird but as a proper Nigerian girl, beans can be combined with things like bread or garri. I decided to have mine with bread. I used the picture on my blackberry and a friend asked me how many calories it contains, I told her i will check after eating the meal......  lets try to estimate it
  • 1/2 cup cooked beans :115 cal
  • wheat bread : 100 cal
  • 1/2 chicken breast: 116 cal
Total: 331 calories ...........didn't add the red pepper and onions in beans

Sweat to Lose

If you want it, you just have to go get it....If you want to weight loss and keep it off, you just have to work for it. Its not easy but it is achievable. If you are working hard and not seeing results, don't worry just push harder. Continue for more picture........

I just love to sweat.......a lot. Please just ignore the hair, Insanity workout makes my hair stand. This was after 45 minutes workout this morning.

Pretty Face but........

yeah my fat pretty face
How annoying is 'you have got a pretty face but if you lose weight' seriously? I got this line  countless time. So is this meant to be a compliment or just a way of voicing out rubbish? Oh you've got pretty face...and so freaking what? I don't see this as a compliment, basically it means ' your
face is pretty while your body is a hot mess'.

Fat people are human and should be treated as such, I really don't appreciate when people talk down on someone because they are Fat/big. When I was fatter than now most guys just want to be friends but after losing 73 kg they want a wife.....seriously? Yeah...a WIFE
If I wasn't presentable to be married at 140 kg then keep moving. I don't take such people serious and talking down on someone just because they are not what you call normal isn't kool as well.

Accountability Check: Day 15 - 23

I have been accountable, eating yummy healthy foods and working out. I did rest on Sunday and Saturday, with weekend cleanings and cooking i barely have time to workout besides my body need time to rest. Yesterday I was so very busy I ate only twice....breakfast and lunch, bad... i know but
i slept off i came back.

For some reason I now find 30 days shred boring, I don't know why but its just not doing it for me. Am not saying it doesn't work, maybe cause I have done it over and over again that it's just not it for me at least for now. I intend giving it a long break before I picking it up again.

I have been enjoying my fruity yogurt and its simply delish.....see picture below
kiwi, plum, banana, pomegranate and yogurt wit peanut butter
kiwi, plum, banana and boiled peanut (weird but delish)

Measuring Cups and spoons

To effectively control your food portion, measuring cup and spoons are very handy even when counting calories. Continuous use of these helps in recognizing portion size when eating out. People always ask me, how did you manage to lose 73 kg? Is it possible? yes it is very possible and the simple formula to it is eating less calories than what you burn daily. Its very easy and simple to get
calorie content in food online or via mobile apps but we always tend to underestimate the calories we consume daily. I use measuring cups and spoons always.

These tools are very handy, don't try to underestimate them. Imagine eyeballing butter or oil when cooking, you will hardly get it right if you don't measure. Keep your measuring tools in the kitchen so it will be at your reach when cooking, measure oil when cooking and anything you are spreading on either your bread or crackers such as peanut butter or jam.
TIP:

  • Make sure your cup and spoon is level when measuring, don't heap or over load them. those will count as extra portion.
  • If after measuring you feel that your meal is too small compared to what you normally eat, swap your big plate for a smaller one so they look bigger on small plates. Downsize everything, from plates to glasses and bowl. This way you won't be thinking that you are eating less.
These tools are important in weight loss but you can't possibly carry them around everywhere. You cannot reply on them when you are eating out but they help you visualize true serving size. Over a period of time, you will get used to what a normal serving size should look like.

To order for yours (If you are in Nigeria) email me

Review: Tested

Whether you are running, jogging, or doing high intensity workout a good sport bra is very essential for comfort and gives the girls some support. I have not had luck finding good sport bra but this one does the job. I wasn't sure buying it but it sure does what it says.
This Lonsdale sport bra with dual shoulder strap is great for support and the elasticated trim at the waistband comfortably fit. A good sport bra is a worth while investment.

My top Five Snack

1. Plain yogurt

yogurt is very rich in calcium, low fat yogurts are good because saturated fats which are bad for cholesterol level are out. I enjoy my low fat plain yogurt by adding cinnamon, sweetener, dried fruits, honey, fresh fruits ...the list is endless. Just today I tried out cinnamon, whey protein powder, peanut butter and pinch of sweetener....WOW...its just very yummy. 100 g of my low fat
plain yogurt is 46 calories...I normally eat 200 g.

2. Carrot and hummus

whether carrot or any sliced veggy like cucumber goes well with hummus. its very easy to make, 1 tablespoon hummus is just 27 calories

3. Melba toast and low fat cheese

Melba toast is dry, thin crisp bread. I love it with either peanut butter or cheese.  Especially laughing cow light cheese. 6 melba toast is just 72 calories plus 25 calories light cheese, not bad for a snack.

4. Fruits and nuts  like apple, orange, berries, almond, peanut etc. My favorite is almond nut, I eat it sometimes with apple and its filling too. A serving of almond nut is 20 to 25 almonds (1 oz or 1/4 cup) which is 164 calories.
5. Granola bar 1 bar has a calorie of 120 to 124 depending on the type, I prefer homemade that way I can reduce the sweetness and oil. Granola bars are good and filling just like oatmeal

Losing Weight and Losing Fat

Lose weight, lose fat........................
Do you know its possible for two people of the same weight and height to have different body fat?
Do you know that you might be losing muscle as well as fat?

Most people think about weight management always, morning, evening, all day....you name it. Each morning you get on the scale, the number on the scale may as well determine your mood for the rest of the day....True or False? Its possible you are on the big size and might think you are overweight
when in reality your body fat is okay while some are moving around with hidden fat that the scale will not show.

So what is your body fat percentage?
At 308 lbs /140 kg my body fat percentage was approximately 55% when it should be between 21% to 33% for someone my age.
The body is made up of various issues including lots of water. Talk about fat, bone, muscle and other issues in the body. Body fat percentage is the percentage of your weight which is made up of fat. So what is the other part called? it is called "lean body mass".

The question now is what is the ideal body fat?
Well this varies in men and women, naturally women need more body fat compared men. like I said naturally but some women have conquered this.....and the consequences of a woman having very low body fat is lack of menstruation....am not going into details, am not expert. We tend to have more body fat due to out breast and the fat around our hips.
BMI (body mass index) is not body fat percentage....

I popped into a health center the other day to check my body fat percentage, the first place calculated 33% and the second center showed approximately 28%. Well am going with the 33% because I believe I have more fat to lose. The ideal range for someone my age, weight and height should be between 21% to 33%. Now my goal is to reduce my body fat to 25%. Some body scale can measure body fat percentage but if yours doesn't just click on the link BODY FAT CALCULATOR to check yours.

FRAUD/SCAM BE WARNED

Okay, a friend of mine in Abuja Nigeria ping me this afternoon that my before and after picture has been going around Nigeria. Going around is not the issue but markets of weight loss pills and drink are now using my picture to sell their product.
Products such as C 9 or cloud 9.....well I don't know their names...................
But be warned if you decide to buy any pill, drink or concoction with my picture tagged to it, you are
on your own because:

I DID NOT USE ANY PILL OR DRINK
Get your ass up and workout, that's what i did. It has taken me 2 years and 5 months to lose 73kg so please do yourself a favor and stop patronizing those bull crap cause I didn't use it.

Again................I did not use any pill period.

Accountability Check: Day 10-14

Good morning all............
Let me start by saying that although I have not posted any thing since 1st May, I have been accountable. I have made wiser food choices and included insanity workout in my workout, so instead of my normal 30 days shred, I now added:

  • Insanity workout
  • 20 minutes pure arm workout
  • 20 minutes pure lower body workout
  • 1000 jump ropes
Since I realized that the scale isn't moving and inches are moving, let me replace the remaining fats with muscles.
I promise to do a long post this week once I get the time .....

Accountability Check: feast of crackers #9

Okay, It was festival of crackers for me. The combination of crackers and peanut butter is just evil...pure evil. I didn't count how much I had but to be honest, it was much. I had to throw away the crackers hahahahaha.....because the more it stares at me, the more i wanted it. There is nothing wrong with eating crackers but I over did it. Am not planning on eating crackers this month because i believe the one i had is enough for my tummy.
That's my confession really. I tried a new workout video today along side 30 days shred. Normally i
can do 200 squats with 3 kg weight, 50 each set but this workout was mainly lower body that incorporates squat, weight and lunges, I must confess my lower body hurts like sore, I can barely go down the stirs. That's a good sign that am doing something right lol.
I will continue with the workout.......

I hope you have started your weight loss journey, stop procrastinating and just get on with it.....its May and by the time you know it, the year is gone..
